The Untitled Series

Wes Lang

Stance is proud to present its Wes Lang limited edition UNTITLED box set. We sat down with Wes to ask him a few questions and the collection. Check out the interview below.

Tell us about the artwork for your "This is Happiness" painting. Why did you choose to let Stance work from this piece?

I woke up one morning and had a vision flash in my head of this piece. It's 7x25 feet. Went to my studio and three days later it was done. This painting just flowed out of me with ease. A very important work to me. The central message is "Doing Your Own Being", a quote from Ram Dass, the most influential person in my life.

Taylor came over to the studio and I rolled it out on the floor for him to see and we agreed on the spot it was the right thing to use for this project. Endless amount of images to pull on this piece.

What artist, musicians, inspire you today?

I am always listening to live Grateful Dead concerts, particularly into shows from 1982 right now. Beyond that, I listen to a lot of jazz and classical music. Bon Iver is also just fucking amazing.

Visual artists...I love Danny Fox--he is the real deal. Don't look at too much new artwork to be honest. Mostly, I look at artists from the past: Mike Kelley, Francis Bacon, Martin Kippenberger, Joan Mitchell, Basquiat, Cy Twombley... These are the people I have learned from.

You don’t work with many brands, what was it about Stance that made you choose to work with us?

That's easy. I love Stance. Scotty Stopnick from Cycle Zombies turned me onto the brand years ago. He used a drawing I did for a shirt for them on some socks with you guys. After that, I started receiving mystery boxes filled with socks at my house. I love new socks, makes the day better, that new sock feeling. I finally met Taylor last year and it was a no-brainer to get involved with y'all.

What’s ahead for Wes Lang?

Lot's of fun stuff! Have a show at Almine Rech Gallery in Paris October 17th. I just launched my coffee company, PUFF, (www.puffcoffee.com) with my best bro Duane Sorenson who founded Stumptown. It's very exciting. We have been working on it for years and now it's live and out in the world. Will be a game changer in the coffee world.Been very hard at work in the studio on a couple new series of paintings, that's my favorite way to spend my time.
